Overview

AkshaRaksha is a disaster-resilient satellite communication ecosystem designed to restore communication during natural disasters and emergency situations when conventional terrestrial communication infrastructure becomes unavailable or severely degraded.

The project addresses one of the most significant challenges faced during disasters: the collapse of communication networks. Floods, cyclones, earthquakes, landslides, and other disasters often damage cellular towers, optical fiber infrastructure, and power systems, leaving affected communities isolated from emergency responders.

AkshaRaksha bridges this communication gap by creating an affordable satellite-assisted emergency communication network that enables affected individuals to transmit distress messages even when traditional communication systems fail. Unlike conventional satellite communication systems that require expensive satellite phones and subscription services, AkshaRaksha is designed around low-cost embedded devices and a dedicated CubeSat constellation, making satellite-based emergency communication more accessible.

Vision

To ensure that no individual becomes unreachable during disasters by creating an affordable, reliable, and globally accessible emergency communication infrastructure powered by satellite technology.

Mission

To democratize satellite communication by developing a low-cost disaster communication ecosystem capable of providing emergency connectivity when terrestrial communication systems become unavailable.

Core Philosophy

Communication saves lives. Every minute without communication delays rescue operations. Every disaster exposes the limitations of terrestrial communication infrastructure. Satellite communication should not be a luxury available only to governments or organizations. AkshaRaksha exists to make emergency communication universally accessible.

Problem Statement

Natural disasters frequently destroy communication infrastructure. Common failures include: cellular tower outages, internet disruption, optical fiber damage, power failure, network congestion, and emergency response delays.

As communication collapses, victims lose the ability to request rescue, share their location, inform family members, receive emergency instructions, and coordinate relief efforts. Although satellite communication remains operational during such disasters, existing solutions are expensive and inaccessible to the general population.

  • Social Impact

AkshaRaksha is not a commercial satellite communication service. Its primary objective is humanitarian impact — ensuring communication remains possible when conventional infrastructure fails. The project seeks to reduce rescue response times, improve coordination among emergency agencies, and increase the accessibility of satellite communication for disaster-prone communities.

    Project Legacy

AkshaRaksha represents the culmination of multiple years of work in embedded systems, communication engineering, aerospace systems, and software development. It builds upon technologies explored in Stellar Crest and extends them into a mission-oriented ecosystem that integrates satellite communication, emergency response, cloud infrastructure, and embedded hardware. Rather than functioning as a standalone engineering project, AkshaRaksha serves as a comprehensive platform that brings together multidisciplinary engineering to address one of the most critical humanitarian challenges: maintaining communication when it is needed most.
