Overview

Tack n Go is a real-time public transportation tracking platform developed to improve the visibility and accessibility of bus location information for passengers and transport operators. The system enables continuous GPS tracking of buses, real-time synchronization through a cloud backend, and live map visualization within an Android application.

The project consists of two primary components: a driver application responsible for continuously transmitting the vehicle's location, and a passenger-facing system that retrieves and visualizes live vehicle positions. By integrating Android development, cloud databases, GPS technology, and real-time synchronization, the platform provides an efficient solution for monitoring moving vehicles.

Purpose

Provide passengers with accurate real-time bus location information while giving transport operators a simple and efficient method of sharing vehicle locations using mobile devices.

Objectives

  • Develop a real-time vehicle tracking platform.
  • Build an Android application for drivers.
  • Continuously transmit GPS location.
  • Synchronize location data through a cloud backend.
  • Display live vehicle locations on maps.
  • Support multiple buses simultaneously.
  • Design a simple workflow for transport operators.
  • Minimize location update latency.
  • Problem Statement

Passengers often experience uncertainty regarding bus arrival times due to the absence of reliable real-time location information. Existing tracking solutions may require specialized hardware or expensive fleet management systems.

Tack n Go demonstrates that smartphones and cloud services can provide an affordable and scalable alternative for live vehicle tracking using GPS and real-time synchronization.

    Core Components

    Driver Application

Responsibilities: Driver authentication · Route selection · GPS acquisition · Continuous location updates · Backend synchronization · Session management

Designed with simplicity in mind so drivers with minimal technical knowledge can operate it easily.

    Driver Authentication

    PIN-based authentication mechanism.

Objectives: Simple user experience · Fast login · Route identification · Controlled access

    Route Selection

Before beginning a trip, the driver selects the assigned route. The selected route associates transmitted GPS coordinates with the appropriate bus service.

    GPS Tracking

    Continuously retrieves current vehicle location.

Location updates include: Latitude · Longitude · Timestamp · Route information

    Firebase Backend

Firebase Firestore as the cloud-based synchronization platform.

Responsibilities: Store live bus locations · Synchronize multiple vehicles · Maintain route information · Distribute updates to connected users · Support scalable real-time communication

    Real-Time Synchronization

Whenever a driver's location changes, updated coordinates are immediately synchronized with the cloud database. Passengers viewing the corresponding route receive updated information without requiring manual refresh.

    Passenger Interface

Responsibilities: Display active buses · Visualize bus positions · Update locations in real time · Provide an intuitive user experience

    Map Visualization

Features: Live vehicle markers · Continuous position updates · Route visualization · Location awareness

    Multi-Vehicle Support

The backend architecture supports simultaneous tracking of multiple buses. Each vehicle maintains an independent data stream while sharing a common backend infrastructure, enabling future expansion to larger transportation networks.

    Communication Workflow

Driver Login → Route Selection → GPS Location Acquisition

→ Firebase Synchronization → Passenger Request → Live Map Update

    Database Structure

Stored information: Driver identifier · Route identifier · Current GPS coordinates · Timestamp · Vehicle status · Session information
